‘Blade Runner 2099’: First Images Tease the Prime Video Sequel Series!! Check It Out!!

After almost 10 years away from the genre, Ridley Scott is officially returning to sci-fi later this year with his new release, The Dog Stars. Scott is best known for directing some of the most legendary sci-fi projects of all time, like Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian. The Alien franchise is still going strong to this day, and while Scott hasn’t directed anything Alien-adjacent since Covenant in 2018, he’s involved as a producer on the franchise’s first TV show, Alien: Earth. Scott has also been tapped to produce another TV spin-off of one of his popular sci-fi franchises, Blade Runner 2099, which is coming to Prime Video later this year. The series will be a direct continuation of both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.

This afternoon, EW released five new images from Blade Runner 2099, showing the first looks at the characters played by Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). Yeoh will play a replicant Blade Runner named Olwen, who is “very much” inspired by Roy Batty’s story from the first film, confirms writer Silka Luisa. Schafer will play Olwen’s partner, Cora, a human trying to blend in as a replicant. After spending her life running from Blade Runners, she “now has to pretend to be one,” says Luisa. Luisa also confirmed that Blade Runner 2099 will be set in a “new world order,” one where “the replicants are now the power brokers in the city, and the humans are the second-class citizens.” She also revealed that, while the series will be a direct descendent of the two films that came before, it will also lean heavily into Philip K. Dick’s original novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which inspired Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner.

Will There Be Another ‘Blade Runner’ Movie?

It’s unclear at this time if there will be another Blade Runner movie, or even if the show will be renewed for Season 2. Blade Runner 2099 is billed as a limited series, so it would be surprising if it was renewed for Season 2, but anything is possible — Hulu’s Shōgun was only planned to run for one season, but after the success of Season 1, the streamer renewed it for Seasons 2 and 3. Furiosa and Black Bag star Tom Burke will also have a key role in Blade Runner 2099 on Prime Video.
