‘Lanterns’ Trailer Sees Hal Jordan & John Stewart Team Up for a Manhunter Murder Mystery!! Check It Out!!

In brightest day on a Friday afternoon in San Diego, DC Comics debuted the new trailer for Lanterns. The new series, based on the mythos of the Green Lantern Corps, will debut next month on HBO, and Collider‘s Samantha Coley was on the scene at San Diego Comic Con to report the latest news.

The series centers around two human members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force: veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), a cocky test pilot, and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a thoughtful ex-Marine. While Jordan attempts to train Jordan in the ways of the Corps and the use of his will-powered Power Ring, they end up drawn into a mystery on Earth, involving the deep-seated secrets of a small community.

At the panel, the show’s creators unveiled a new trailer for the series, which is set to premiere on HBO August 16. The trailer seems to reveal the threat facing the duo, which leads them to insert themselves into a seemingly normal murder: the Manhunters. Created by comics legend Jack Kirby, the Manhunters were the Guardians of the Universe’s first attempt to create a space police force; however, the shapeshifting robots went rogue, and became the enemy of their successors, the Green Lantern Corps. The trailer also gives us our first glimpse at Ulrich Thomsen‘s Sinestro; once Hal Jordan’s friend and mentor on the Corps, he turned to evil. As seen in the trailer, the purple-skinned alien is now the Corps’ prisoner, but still has some words of wisdom for his old friend. Who Are the Creatives Behind ‘Lanterns’?

Lanterns was created by Chris Mundy (True Detective), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and Tom King, the comics author behind the upcoming Mister Miracle animated series. In addition to the two stars, the series also features Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Garret Dillahunt (Deadwood), and Poorna Jagannathan (Deli Boys). It takes place in the larger DC cinematic universe, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who first appeared in last summer’s Superman, will make an appearance: Pierre’s John Stewart is also set to return in next year’s big-screen Superman adventure Man of Tomorrow.
