Fans fell in love with Harrison Ford‘s Indiana Jones back in the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now, 45 years later, we’re still invested in Indiana Jones’ story. At San Diego Comic-Con, Lucasfilm Publishing announced a new and exciting adventure for Indy called Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium. The comic from Marvel is set to release this December from author Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder. It is set to kick off an “all-new era of comic book adventures for the iconic archaeologist set during the original groundbreaking films.”

The announcement arrived alongside a broader slate of publishing news across Lucasfilm franchises, including new Star Wars titles focused on Darth Vader and the Rogue One era. Among the reveals, however, the upcoming Indiana Jones comic stands out for its intriguing placement in the canon timeline. The series promises a rare look into Indy’s relationship with Marion Ravenwood in the immediate wake of Raiders of the Lost Ark, exploring the period after their encounter with the Ark of the Covenant that has rarely been explored before.

In the wake of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy’s most notorious villains, including the impossible return of an archenemy, seek a terrifying new source of power to recoup their loss—one that’s fallen into the hands of his former companion, Marion Ravenwood. Now, Indiana Jones has to race to the far corners of the globe in search of a biblical weapon, embarking on an epic quest that will put both his archeology skills and skepticism of the supernatural to the ultimate test!

There Is Still a Desire For More Indiana Jones Stories

While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny recently offered audiences a look at a world-weary Indy reignited by goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), it was far from the franchise’s first exploration of the hero’s later years. Decades prior, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles famously used bookend scenes featuring an elderly Indy reflecting on his youth, cementing a long-standing tradition of examining different eras of the archaeologist’s life. This new comic run taps into that same appetite for expanded lore, offering a fresh, and much closer look at the key years between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
