Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey has become a box office success. Not only did it drive many to IMAX theaters, leading to sold-out sessions, but as of writing, it has made over $700 million worldwide at the box office. And while its streaming release date has yet to be announced, fans will be able to take this blockbuster hit home.
The Odyssey is based on Homer‘s Greek Epic, the Odyssey, which follows Odysseus’s (Matt Damon) long journey home after the Trojan War, while his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and his son Telemachus (Tom Holland) deal with the suitors in their home, who are attempting to win Penelope’s hand in marriage, despite the two having hope that Odysseus will return. Since its release, it immediately became Nolan’s highest-rated film among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at a 94% Certified Fresh Critics Score, while audiences gave it a high 97%.
While fans wait for a physical or streaming release date for The Odyssey, they can bring a piece of the film home. Amazon has posted a listing for The Odyssey: The Official Screenplay, and it’s now available for pre-order, scheduled to come out next month. This book contains 240 pages of The Odyssey‘s official script and will be available in paperback for $17.95 and on Kindle for $16.99. Note: This is not the novelization of The Odyssey, but it’s still a good companion piece to have, especially as people have streamed the behind-the-scenes making-of the feature on Peacock, making it a streaming hit.
What To Watch If You Like ‘The Odyssey’
If you finished watching The Odyssey and want to tune in to something similar, there are many projects out there that could bring you back to that epic tale. The first that comes to mind is Troy, a 2004 film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Brian Cox, and Sean Bean. Inspired by Homer‘s Iliad, the film follows the events of the Trojan War
If you’re after another interpretation of The Odyssey, then The Simpsons episode “Tales from the Public Domain” or the concept album Epic: The Musical by Jorge Rivera-Herrans are worth visiting. Both tell their version of Homer’s Greek epic, so it won’t be identical to how Nolan adapted the tale, showcasing how this Ancient Greek story was retold over the years.
But if you’re after an adaptation of the Odyssey that’s appropriate for kids, there is an argument that 2004’s Homer‘s Greek epic influenced The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. This was the first animated feature film for this long-running Nickelodeon kids’ show, and during The Odyssey‘s release, people began to compare the Greek epic with this feature, noting some similarities like both titles having a cyclops and Scarlett Johansson‘s Princess Mindy being SpongeBob’s version of Zendaya‘s Athena.
The Odyssey is now showing in theaters. The Odyssey: The Official Screenplay is scheduled to come out on August 4, 2026.
