Guy Ritchie has been as busy as ever so far in 2026, and there are no signs he’s slowing down. On the big screen, he finally released his latest star-studded action thriller, In the Grey, with Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González after a series of delays, and has his sharp British aristocracy-set satire Wife and Dog set for release in October, led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike, among others. Television, however, is where he’s about to have a big year. Season 2 of his smash hit The Gentlemen series premieres on Netflix on September 3, just weeks before Paramount+ drops the sophomore outing of Tom Hardy‘s MobLand, which he directed for. This March also marked the debut of his much-anticipated Young Sherlock, which premiered its first round of mysteries to rave reviews and was a mainstay on the Prime Video charts throughout the spring.
Created and showrun by Matthew Parkhill, Young Sherlock puts Ritchie back in his element a full 15 years after Sherlock Holmes 2 bowed in theaters. Unlike Robert Downey Jr.‘s version of the famed detective, it follows a raw, brash, and undisciplined Sherlock in his younger years at Oxford, still far from becoming the master detective everyone knows from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s novels. He’s thrust into his bombastic first case, however, when a murder threatens his liberty and, once he starts digging, extends into a full-on global conspiracy. The origin story debuted to immediate success with 45 million viewers within its first 28 days of release and now sits among the top ten most-watched seasons of Prime Video series of all time. No legendary sleuth was needed to determine that Season 2 was all but certain, and now, just a few short months after renewal, the next mystery is officially taking shape.
Production has been underway on the series’ return since May, with Ritchie, who co-developed the series with Peter Harness, directing the first episode. Deadline has now confirmed that the Season 2 cast has already added some extra firepower for the occasion from the land of Westeros. Game of Thrones alumni Indira Varma and Aidan Gillen are among the first names to be added to the action comedy-drama, with Olivia Williams, last seen in Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Dune: Prophecy, and Outlander‘s Sophie Skelton also joining them. They’ll link up with a returning cast led by Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular young Sherlock Holmes, Dónal Finn as his rival James Moriarty, and Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Holly Cattle as Holmes’ family.
What to Expect from ‘Young Sherlock’ Season 2
Season 1 of Young Sherlock ended on an explosive note, with Holmes confronting his father, Silas (Joseph Fiennes), at the factory where his chemical weapon is produced and witnesses as he falls to his death. Shaken by both Silas’ demise and the years of ruthless manipulation he’s subjected the family to, Holmes now looks towards the future with an eye of suspicion on his friend and eventual foe, Moriarty. Fiennes is not aboard the Season 2 cast, and neither is his fixer, played by Numan Acar, which means there may be no surprise reveal that he survived his fall after all. Zine Tseng, whose arc wrapped up after Shou’an achieved vengeance for her village for the weapon tests and returned home, is also not set to return. Rather, Sherlock’s next case may be somewhat of a fresh start, albeit forever marked by the revelations about his family and the changes in the people around him.
