‘Clueless’: Paramount+ Officially Saves Cancelled ‘90s Reboot Series!!

Released in 1995, Clueless was one of that summer’s biggest surprise hits, and is now regarded as one of the greatest teen movies of all time. A loose retelling of Jane Austen‘s 1815 novel Emma, Clueless centered around the adventures of teenage fashionista Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) and her romantic travails, which eventually lead to her ex-step-brother, Josh Lucas (Paul Rudd).

The movie actually spawned a small-screen spin-off almost right away; a TV version of the series, starring many of the film’s cast members (but not Silverstone, who was replaced by Rachel Blanchard) ran for three seasons on ABC and later UPN. Recently, as the nostalgia cycle reached the 1990s, streamers have been eyeing the film again. For a time, a spin-off centering around Cher’s best friend, Dionne Davenport (Stacey Dash) was in the works at Peacock; when it didn’t materialize, a full sequel to the series with Silverstone was mooted, but that was rejected by the Universal-owned streamer earlier this year. It seemed the project was as stalled as a virgin who can’t drive.

As if! As reported by Deadline, the long-in-development Clueless TV series is now coming to Paramount+. Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz in the miniseries; 30 years after the events of the film, successful businesswoman Cher finds herself parenting a teenager of her own. Silverstone will also executive produce the series, which will be penned by Josh Schwartz (The O.C.), Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), and Jordan Weiss (Dollface). Schwartz, Savage, and Weiss will also executive produce the series, alongside Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, and Robert Lawrence, who produced it.

What Is ‘Clueless’ About?

Silverstone stars as Cher Horowitz, a Beverley Hills teenager who seems to have everything figured out, despite being raised by workaholic attorney Mel (Dan Hedaya) after her mother’s death during a botched liposuction. Inspired by the idealistic Josh (Rudd), who remains a family friend even after Mel divorced his mother, Cher sets about doing good deeds; after successfully matchmaking two of her teachers (Wallace Shawn and Twink Caplan), she takes on awkward transfer student Tai (Brittany Murphy) as her next project. However, the student soon overtakes the master, and Cher discovers that she’s the one who’s truly clueless.

A Clueless sequel series is in development at Paramount+.
