‘The Adventures of Tintin 2’: Peter Jackson Officially Confirms He Is Directing the Sequel!!

One of the greatest fantasy worlds ever created remains J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Middle-earth, with its elves, dwarves, orcs, Balrogs, and wizards. While other realms have since been introduced into the fantasy genre over the past decades, Middle-earth still stands apart. Much of its cultural appeal stems from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson in the early 2000s, which remains one of the best movie trilogies of all time. The Oscar-winning trilogy put Jackson, a New Zealand-born filmmaker, on the map, and he soon returned to direct his The Hobbit trilogy, which was released between 2012 and 2014.

While The Lord of the Rings trilogy was exceedingly successful, his next set of feature films, being the Martin Freeman-led The Hobbit, wasn’t. While Jackson has enjoyed other roles within the industry, including his 2018 World War II documentary film They Shall Not Grow Old, he has not directed a feature since. In 2024, when Warner Bros. made it clear it wanted to return to Middle-earth with a new set of Lord of the Rings films. Some wondered if Jackson might be considered to direct. Ultimately, the first film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, now sees Andy Serkis directing the film while also returning to his franchise role as Smeagol/Gollum. Jackson, however, serves as a producer and co-writer on the film with longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens writing the screenplay.

However, it is somewhat shocking that an individual who directed the most awarded film series in cinematic history has not gotten in the director’s seat in well over a decade. Thankfully, that is all about to change for Jackson as the director has revealed he’ll lead the effort to deliver a sequel to 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin. Speaking to Gold Derby, Jackson revealed that his eagerly anticipated return has him working on a script with his partner Fran Walsh. “Fran and I have been writing a script for the next Tintin film because 15 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed a Tintin film and I produced it,” Jackson told the outlet. The director reveals that the plan then was for a sequel to follow immediately, with him and Steven Spielberg looking to “swap the roles,” with Spielberg producing and Jackson directing. Despite lamenting how long it’s taken, Jackson affirms that “it’s a timeless story” which “just wrapped up.” So yes, the next film Peter Jackson will “actually direct” is a Tintin movie.

Why Has Peter Jackson Been Away From the Director’s Chair This Long?

Jackson‘s film will be a follow-up to the only animated film in Spielberg‘s Oscar-winning catalog, which, despite having to contend with other classics, like Saving Private Ryan, remains a cult favorite. Since 2014, with the sequel The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Jackson has avoided the director’s chair outside of documentary filmmaking. While producing Mortal Engines in 2018 and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in 2024, among other projects have kept him busy. He remained absent from the job role that made him famous. However, in January 2026, Jackson addressed his absence from feature filmmaking, explaining that the death of his longtime cinematographer, Andrew Lesnie, prompted his absence from the director’s chair. “I think his death changed my creative path,” Jackson said in the clip made for a rerelease of The Return of the King. “The result is for 11 or 12 years, I haven’t made a drama film because that would require me to build a relationship with another DP.”
