‘Wonder Man’ Cancelled After One Season Despite Renewal!!

This is one we’re not happy about. Marvel’s Disney+ era has largely been built around limited series, with the likes of WandaVision, Moon Knight and Hawkeye telling stories designed to feed into the wider MCU rather than run indefinitely. Wonder Man looked like it might be one of the rare exceptions.

Wonder Man has officially been cancelled at Disney+ and will not return for Season 2, Variety is reporting. That’s despite Disney announcing the show’s renewal back in March, making this considerably more surprising than your standard streaming cancellation.

According to the report, a writers’ room was never opened for the previously announced second season, while the show’s writers have now been released to pursue other projects. There is at least some hope for its characters, with a source indicating that they could still appear elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a shocker, too, because just ten days ago, creator Destin Daniel Cretton told Collider that he hoped production would begin this year.

Created by Cretton and Andrew Guest, Wonder Man followed struggling Hollywood actor Simon Williams (Abdul-Mateen) as he attempted to land a potentially career-changing role in a remake of the fictional superhero movie Wonder Man. Along the way, he befriended Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), the utterly hopeless English actor audiences first met pretending to be the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Guest took to Instagram to confirm the news, thanking the stars and whose who had supported the series.

Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man. So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with Destin, Yahya and Sir Ben Kingsley. Want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.

Is ‘Wonder Man’ Any Good?

Critics certainly liked what they saw. Season 1 currently holds a superb 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Abdul-Mateen subsequently received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Its streaming performance appears to have been considerably more muted, though, which suggests that brass tax is the ultimate decider at the end of the day, despite critical acclaim. Disney never publicly released viewership figures, while Wonder Man made only one appearance on Nielsen’s streaming charts. It ranked eighth among streaming originals during the week of January 26-February 1 before disappearing from the Top 10 the following week.

The cancellation leaves Loki and Daredevil: Born Again as the only two Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series to somehow make it to a second season. The cast also included X Mayo (The Blackening), Demetrius Grosse (Fear the Walking Dead), Zlatko Burić(Triangle of Sadness), Arian Moayed (Succession), and Olivia Thirlby (Dredd).
