Christopher Nolan‘s latest epic, an adaptation of Homer‘s The Odyssey, has been a dominant force on the big screen for the past couple of weeks, earning the great director’s biggest opening weekend haul and winning universal critical praise in the process. But that’s all set to change this weekend as Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker swings back into action in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the last feature-length step on the road to Marvel‘s Avengers: Doomsday.

First reactions to the movie, which is finally in theaters, have been hugely positive, with Brand New Day earning a 90% score from critics and a near-perfect 98% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Charlie Ridgley awarded the movie an 8/10 in his review for Collider, calling it “the best Spidey adventure in 20 years.” Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Sadie Sink all feature in supporting roles in a movie that feels like the grittier start of a new chapter for Holland‘s Spidey, although a lot of attention has now been put on who will be his successor.

Holland himself has now weighed in on what the future of his character could look like, and you might be surprised to learn that such a plan has been in the works since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland said, “There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home.” He continued, “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.” Of course, we’re far from knowing what the future exactly holds, but many are hoping it will be in the form of Miles Morales.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Has Already Broken an ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Record at the Box Office

Spider-Man, and the MCU in general, have regularly broken box office records and smashed even the biggest of theatrical competition. But the projections for Brand New Day‘s opening weekend have exceeded even the highest of expectations. According to an industry analyst portal, the film is eyeing an enormous global opening of $800 million, with $300 million earned domestically, a feat that hasn’t been seen since Avengers: Endgame, which earned a ludicrous $1.2 billion in its first weekend.
