Inde Navarrette is no longer making Marvel fans guess which mutant she wants.
Speaking with Variety, the Obsession breakout named Mystique as her dream role, just weeks after we flagged her meeting with X-Men reboot director Jake Schreier.
Asked which character she grew up with and would love to play, even one already portrayed by somebody else, Navarrette went straight to the blue shapeshifter.
“Mystique has always been super cool,” Navarrette said.
Her interest started behind the scenes. Navarrette said she grew up watching footage from the making of the X-Men movies and studying the prosthetics process, much like she did with Pirates of the Caribbean.
That would include Rebecca Romijn’s full-body Mystique makeup, which reportedly took around nine hours a day during production on the 2000 film.
For a character built around transformation, the prosthetics are what first pulled Navarrette in.
What Happened In The Jake Schreier Meeting
When Navarrette first revealed the Schreier meeting in her NYLON interview earlier this month, she gave no details.
Now she is talking about what happened in the room.
Navarrette told Variety she has taken a lot of meetings since Obsession blew up, and her conversation with Schreier quickly became a Thunderbolts appreciation session.
She said what Schreier brought to the movie was “what I used to love about Marvel,” praising it as character driven. Navarrette admitted she spent the meeting gushing about the film, congratulating him, and telling him how much she wanted to work with him.
She also called Schreier “a very sweet person.”
Navarrette did not pretend the meeting guaranteed anything. She stressed that not every Hollywood meeting becomes a project and described it as an opportunity to express her interest in working with Schreier.
So no, this is not casting news.
But actresses do not usually name a specific mutant to a Variety camera by accident while the director they just met is actively casting an X-Men movie.
Whether Navarrette intended it that way or not, she just gave Marvel a public audition for Mystique.
Hunter Schafer Is Still The Mystique Rumor
Navarrette is not the first name connected to the role.
Per our X-Men reboot casting rumor tracker, Hunter Schafer has been linked to Mystique for months, making it one of the more persistent rumors surrounding the reboot.
Neither actress is confirmed, and Marvel has announced nothing about Mystique.
The difference is where the names come from.
Schafer’s name comes from the scooper circuit. Navarrette put herself into the conversation on the record, after meeting the director, and has now discussed that meeting twice.
Marvel Has Started Making The Cast Real
The timing is what makes Navarrette’s comments more than standard dream-casting talk.
They arrived the same day the reboot landed its first confirmed mutant. Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost, per Deadline, after final tests wrapped shortly after July 4th.
Weaving appeared on none of the major rumor lists, another reminder that Marvel’s real casting process may look very different from the names circulating online.
More announcements are expected around D23, where the Disney Entertainment Showcase takes over the Honda Center on Friday, August 14. Marvel has not confirmed that additional X-Men casting will be revealed there.
Still, with the first role now official, every meeting Schreier took this summer carries more weight than a routine Hollywood general.
Kevin Feige has described the reboot as a youth-focused reset built around fresh faces, and Navarrette fits that lane at 25.
She also enters the conversation with real momentum from Obsession, the $750,000 horror movie that cleared $400 million worldwide and became Focus Features’ biggest movie ever.
