When one thinks of the romantasy genre in TV, it’s hard to look past Starz‘ hit series, Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon‘s book series of the same name. A blend of time travel sci-fi, fantasy, and romance with each balanced to near-perfect execution, the tale of Caitríona Balfe‘s (Belfast, Ford v Ferrari) Claire and Sam Heughan‘s (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Love Again) Jamie kept viewers gripped for a total of eight seasons, culminating in an explosive final installment earlier this year.

Opening to nearly 3 million multi-platform viewers, making it the number one scripted cable program of the week, Season 8 of Outlander was one of the best, with Collider‘s Carly Lane saying that “the final season resembles more of a warm, reassuring hug for viewers.” With the mainline Outlander series now finished, and despite the legacy living on through the Outlander: Blood of My Blood spin-off, fans will be looking for any new romantasy adaptation to sink their teeth into.

Well, the next adaptation sure to prove a huge hit with audiences is now on its way, as revealed exclusively by Deadline. Sheila Masterson‘s dark enemies-to-lovers romantasy novel, The Poison Daughter, is being turned into a series courtesy of Hulu. The novel, which was a self-published phenomenon last year that sold more than 250,000 copies and earned a spot on the USA Today Bestseller list three times, will be executive-produced by Masterson under 20th Television. From almost 100,000 ratings, the novel holds a remarkable 4.4/5 score on GoodReads, with a synopsis reading:

“Every person Harlow Carrenwell kisses dies immediately, and that’s the way she likes it. The poison-lipped youngest daughter of Lunameade’s magical founding family has used her power to annihilate their opposition.”

What’s the Most Famous Romantasy Story?

The romantasy genre is relatively new, all things considered, and it certainly wouldn’t be as culturally relevant or popular if it weren’t for a little-known book series by Stephanie Meyer. Of course, we’re talking about Twilight, the novel series that purists would argue is actually paranormal romance instead of romantasy. Either way, the many movies and shows in the genre we love today simply wouldn’t be where they are if it weren’t for Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson).
