George R. R. Martin is, to his credit, an author who continually keeps his fans updated on how things are going in his person and professional life. But the notoriously open author has been very quiet this year, and now, he’s taken a moment to explain the difficulties he’s facing as he attempts to not only finish The Winds of Winter, but just live his life.

Writing on his Not a Blog, Martin acknowledged that 2026 has been one of the toughest years he has faced, revealing that grief, depression and the pressures of getting older have taken a significant toll. While he didn’t directly address the status of The Winds of Winter, it’s easy enough to read between the lines as to why we’re no longer getting the updates we hoped for. Martin began by apologizing for his lengthy absence from blogging, explaining that the demands of the past several months had become overwhelming.

“This year has been… stressful, to say the least. So much has been happening, it’s been overwhelming. Some great things, exciting things. Dreams coming true. But there have been nightmares too. I have lost friends. Battled sadness and depression. The worst may be yet to come.” I turned seventy-seven last September, and I tell you, getting old is no fun. But there have been amazing times as well. I suppose that’s just life.”

What Does It Mean for ‘The Winds of Winter’?

Martin didn’t specifically mention his great white whale of a novel but it’s not difficult to connect the dots here, because the book has been in development now for more than 15 years but remains unfinished. Instead of discussing the novel, Martin explained why his online presence has virtually disappeared, but again, there’s that reference to “falling further and further behind“, which does raise some alarm bells.

“My last blog post went up here on February 19… even with their help, I kept falling further and further behind. My posts are likely to [be] short and rushed.”

Martin also highlighted one major positive development, celebrating the Emmy success of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The Game of Thrones prequel received nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, with Martin writing:

“I am proud of our team, and hope we take home a few of the statues.”

He admitted, however, that he had hoped to see some acting nominations as well, adding:

“There’s always next year.”
