For more than a decade, Game of Thrones has been one of television’s biggest deals. From the record-breaking success of the original HBO series to House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe has almost exclusively been on the small screen since that very first adaptation but things are about to get much bigger.
During its 2027 slate presentation, Warner Bros. Discovery officially confirmed that Aegon’s Conquest will be released as a theatrical event movie, marking the first feature film set in the Game of Thrones universe. The announcement came as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s long-term theatrical roadmap, with the studio outlining several major franchise releases planned beyond 2027. In its presentation, the company said:
“Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon’s Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next installment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey.”
What Is ‘Aegon’s Conquest’?
Aegon’s Conquest tells one of the most pivotal stories in George R.R. Martin’s mythology. It’s also probably the coolest, because it’s set 300 years before the events of Thrones and follows Aegon Targaryen alongside his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, as they invade Westeros with their dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.
The campaign ended up uniting six of the Seven Kingdoms under one banner, and everyone lived happily ever after. Absolutely nothing went wrong with the Targaryen line after decades of inbreeding. Nope. The conquest was so legendary, it’s mentioned constantly in Thrones and House of the Dragon.
Balerion is something we’re very excited to see on screen. The skull of Balerion was first seen inside the crypt in King’s Landing, and he is massive. He has black scales, enormous wings and flames capable of melting castles. That’s why he was known as Balerion the Black Dread. Vhagar is still around now, causing havoc in House of the Dragon, while Meraxes was renowned for her speed and immense size before ultimately being killed during the First Dornish War. Their campaign united six of the Seven Kingdoms under House Targaryen, forever reshaping the political landscape of Westeros and laying the foundations for the Iron Throne.
