‘The Matrix 5’ Is Officially Happening!!

The last few years have been huge for Keanu Reeves, especially as he continued to build out the John Wick franchise with John Wick: Chapter 4 and a supporting role in Ballerina. Reeves also made his debut in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise back in 2024 as Shadow the Hedgehog, and he’s confirmed to return and reprise his role as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which opens in theaters on March 19, 2027. Already in 2026, Reeves starred in one of the biggest Apple TV sleeper hits of the year with Outcome, which was written and directed by Jonah Hill. He can also be seen voicing Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5, which is one of the few 2026 films to reach $1 billion at the box office.

While many would argue that John Wick is Keanu Reeves‘ most famous role, he was transforming the sci-fi genre as Neo in The Matrix movies long before he was ever cracking skulls as a High Table assassin. Reeves has starred in four Matrix movies, The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), and the legacy sequel, The Matrix Resurrections (2021). All the way back in 2024, it was announced that Warner Bros. Discovery was working on another Matrix movie, but few details are known about the project at this time. Drew Goddard is writing the script for the film, but casting and plot details are being kept under wraps at this time. While some fans have cast doubt that the movie is actually going to happen, Warner Bros. Discovery doubled down on the future of The Matrix this afternoon, confirming that the fifth film is in active development and likely to be released after 2027.

What Else Did Warner Bros Announce?

One of the most exciting announcements made during the new Warner Bros. Discovery press release is that Jim Carrey is set to star in a live-action Jetsons film, which is also going to be released after 2027. Warner Bros also confirmed the active development of a new Game of Thrones movie centered around Aegon’s conquest, as well as Matt Reeves’ new Batman sequel that’s now filming ahead of its February 2028 premiere date. Coming in 2027 for Warner Bros are F.A.S.T. from Taylor Sheridan, an Ocean’s prequel from Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper, and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
