‘The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television And The World’: ‘Star Trek’ Doc Sets Theatrical Release!!

It’s been a long road to get Star Trek back into theaters. The franchise hasn’t hit the big screen since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond continued (and seemingly ended) the Kelvin Universe of films that began with 2009’s J.J. Abrams‘ Trek reboot. However, while it isn’t Paramount‘s long-delayed new Trek blockbuster, the franchise will be hitting a theater near you this fall.

It’s Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary this fall, and while celebrations have been a little muted, with both current Trek series (Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy) coming to a conclusion, there are still ways to explore the franchise anew. Nacelle‘s Star Trek documentary series, The Center Seat, is returning to Prime Video, Tubi, and YouTube this fall with a new season. Plus, another documentary, going back to where it all began with the franchise’s most iconic star, is set for a theatrical run.

Deadline reports that The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television And The World, a new documentary executive produced by William Shatner, the original Captain James T. Kirk, is setting a course for theaters. The documentary will have a theatrical run exclusively at Regal Cinemas starting on October 9. It will go into depth on the creation and production of the groundbreaking Star Trek: The Original Series, and will feature interviews with all three of the show’s surviving cast members: Shatner, George Takei (Hikaru Sulu), and Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov). Star Trek talent will be available in select screenings for Q&A sessions, as well.

While Star Trek creator and “Great Bird of the Galaxy” Gene Roddenberry died in 1991, his son, Gene Roddenberry, Jr., will be interviewed for the documentary, as will Star Trek writers, directors, producers, noted fans, and critics. Several subsequent Trek series will be represented as well, with interviews from The Next Generation‘s Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, and Denise Crosby; Deep Space Nine‘s Nana Visitor; Voyager‘s Robert Picardo, and Strange New Worlds‘ Ethan Peck and Christina Chong. The documentary is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, and produced by Michael S. Broder of Galaxie Pictures.
