Netflix has found plenty of success with non-English language productions, such as the hugely popular Troll and the Spanish survival drama Society of the Snow. In 2024, the soul of Jaws was repackaged with French finesse in Under Paris, a French horror thriller that saw the people of La Ville-Lumière hunted by a mutated shark ahead of the World Triathlon Championships. Becoming Netflix‘s second-most-watched non-English film ever, behind the aforementioned Troll, Under Paris was such a hit that it has even earned a sequel.
Set three years after the River Seine was infested by a terrifying threat, Under Paris 2 started filming back in May, with prolific French director Alexandre Aja, who most recently teamed up with Halle Berry for the supernatural horror Never Let Go, behind the camera. The promise of more thrills from the depths of Parisian waters is exciting enough for fans of French-language projects on Netflix, but they might be about to burst with joy at the news that another of Netflix’s most successful French-language titles is officially getting a sequel.
A sequel to Ad Vitam, the French action thriller starring Guillaume Canet and Nassim Lyes, is officially in the works. The sequel features the working title “Ad Vitam Eternam,” which is Latin for “to eternal life,” at the time of writing, with Canet confirmed to reprise his role as Franck Lazareff. The sequel will be directed by Ludovic Colbeau-Justin, who replaces Rodolphe Lauga. Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Sophie Marceau, and Mathieu Amalric also star. A synopsis for the sequel reads:
“After surviving an assassination attempt upon his release from prison, Franck sets out to find out who wants him dead. He goes to hide away with his family in the mountains. But French intelligence services track him down and offer him a deal: a covert mission in exchange for the truth Franck is seeking.”
‘Ad Vitam’ Was a Huge Ratings Hit
When reading the data behind the first film, it’s clear to see why Netflix has pulled the trigger on an Ad Vitam sequel. Within its first month on the platform, it became one of the 10 biggest international movies in Netflix history with 54.5 million views, recording 17.1 million views globally within its first three days. The film was a regular on the international streaming charts, even ranking as high as first place in several countries.
