Prime Video is officially bringing the perfect ACOTAR replacement to screens in partnership with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions. You may recall that Hulu‘s TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s popular romantasy book series A Court of Thorns and Roses was officially cancelled back in 2025 with little to no hope of it coming to small screens any time soon. Fortunately, fans of the beloved novels now have something exciting to look forward to as Amazon has acquired the rights to Holly Black‘s Folk of the Air series.
This news may not sit well with many Amazon subscribers, especially since its streaming platform has a history of cancelling some of its top fantasy series, most notably The Wheel of Time. The 3-part magical series premiered on November 19, 2021, and after three seasons and 24 episodes, it concluded on April 17, 2025. While Season 3 was undoubtedly the strongest installment, the show was still cancelled just a month after the finale. This decision was partly due to high production costs and changing viewership patterns, as previously reported by Prime Video.
Although fans continue to campaign for The Wheel of Time’s revival more than a year after its cancellation, news of Holly Black‘s Folk of the Air adaptation offers reassurance. Per PEOPLE, Black is set to produce the new series with Ridley Scott‘s company, based on the best-selling trilogy that started in 2018 with The Cruel Prince. The series’ follow-up books, The Wicked King and The Queen of Nothing, are the second and third installments, while several novellas are featured in between, such as A Visit to the Impossible Lands, The Lost Sisters, and How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories.
What to Expect in Prime Video’s Next Fantasy Adaptation
Set in the faerie world of Elfhame, The Folk of the Air is a young adult fantasy series centered on Jude Duarte, a mortal girl who is taken to the dangerous faerie kingdom after her parents are brutally murdered. Raised among faeries who look down on humans, Jude is determined to earn her place in their world and becomes involved in royal politics, betrayals, power struggles, and her complex relationship with Prince Cardan, the youngest son of the High King. This series is ideal for fans of dark romance who enjoy political intrigue and shifting alliances. In addition to the companion novels and novellas, the Folk of the Air saga includes the Stolen Heir duology, with the first book published three years ago, which follows a new generation of characters.
