Miami Vice ’85 has found its latest star. The Joseph Kosinski take on the classic 1984 series, Miami Vice, is reportedly set to star Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler and now, Oppenheimer star Alden Ehrenreich is in talks to join the duo. Miami Vice ’85 is written by Nightcrawler director and writer Dan Gilroy. The news came through an exclusive with Deadline, stating that sources are pointing to Ehrenreich as the latest addition. So far what is known about this take on Miami Vice is limited but it has been reported that it is a reimagining of the pilot of the 1984 series. It will be filmed for IMAX.

Previous attempts at a Miami Vice film included the 2006 Michael Mann film that had Colin Farrell as James Crockett and Jamie Foxx and Ricardo Tubbs. The original run of the show featured Don Johnson as Crockett, becoming a fashion icon with his white suits and colorful shirts. Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs. The show itself was known for its vibrant look and iconic soundtrack but it was also an incredibly serious and dark police procedural. An energy the Mann film tried to include that resulted in the film lacking in the vibrancy of the original series.

It is not yet known how Kosinski‘s film will bring the two together. Previously, Kosinski brought back franchises like Tron and Top Gun with his films Tron: Legacy and Top Gun: Maverick. He knows how to marry the nostalgia fans have for these properties with a new story told within them and while Gilroy‘s Miami Vice ’85 is reimagining what the show built, it still will be a perfect fit for Koskinsi. And the cast is shaping up to include the biggest and brightest stars of Hollywood, especially with Ehrenreich on the cast list.

A Great New Adventure For Alden Ehrenreich

Ehrenreich has been consistently working for quite some time. Making a name for himself in the 2013 film Beautiful Creatures, he quickly became a household name when he was cast as a younger version of Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. While the movie received mixed reviews, it allowed Ehrenreich to continue to work, going on to star in Zach Cregger’s Weapons and the Oscar-winning Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer. Miami Vice ’85 does mark a return for Ehrenreich to a franchise. His role is unknown and whether that means he’s the “villain” of this adaptation or an important part of the Miami Police Department, it will be exciting to see Ehrenreich take on whatever Gilroy and Kosinski throw at him.
