Last summer, Nathan Fillion debuted as Guy Gardner, the newest, and most obnoxious, member of DC Comics‘ iconic Green Lantern Corps. After making his first bow in Superman, he’s gone on to appear in a bevy of other projects in the James Gunn-led new DC cinematic universe. Now, we know he’s set to make another appearance in an upcoming series, which will depict the character in a whole new way.
The mop-topped Gardner first turned up as the leader of the so-called “Justice Gang” in Superman, a ragtag collection of heroes working for the corporate sponsorship of Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn); despite his caustic nature, Gardner does prove he has a heart by the end of the film, aiding Superman (David Corenswet) at a key moment. He then turned up alongside Justice Gang teammate Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) on an episode of the second season of Peacemaker. Next up, he’s slated to appear with fellow ring-slingers Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) on HBO‘s Lanterns, which will debut on HBO this weekend. He will also return to the big screen with a bevy of other DC characters in next summer’s Man of Tomorrow.
And after that, Gardner will venture into the world of animation on DC‘s upcoming animated series Mister Miracle. Tom King, the series’ creator, revealed that information to Entertainment Weekly; King, a noted comic book writer, is also behind Lanterns. Says King, “We brought Nathan into Mister Miracle’s show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful. He brings that energy to every aspect of it. And you would think it would be different tonally from [Lanterns], but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.” The plan for DC‘s new projects is to have the same actors play their characters in both live-action and animation; in the first DC animated series under Gunn‘s aegis, Creature Commandos, saw Frank Grillo (Rick Flag), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Steve Agee (John Economos) reprise their live-action characters.
What Is ‘Mister Miracle’ About?
Mister Miracle, alias Scott Free, was created by comic legend Jack Kirby in 1971. He is the son of Highfather, the ruler of the peaceful planet New Genesis. As part of a peace deal, he was handed over to the cruel Darkseid, ruler of the hellish Apokolips, to raise, while Highfather took in Darkseid’s son Orion. Raised by the merciless Granny Goodness, Scott rebelled against Darkseid’s rule and became the costumed escape artist Mister Miracle. He soon allied with, and romanced, the bombastic Big Barda, a turncoat member of Granny Goodness’ Female Furies. King and artist Mitch Gerads published a 12-issue Mister Miracle series in 2017, which will serve as the basis for the series. No other voice casting for the series has yet been announced.
