After facing three cancellations, the third of which ultimately brought the show to an end, CBS’ Emmy-nominated procedural still appears to have a bright future. S.W.A.T. ended on May 16, 2025, with a high-stakes Season 8 finale that left several fans somewhat dissatisfied. Unfortunately, there was little that could be done about it, as the series had been cancelled for the final time two months earlier. However, there is an upside: S.W.A.T. isn’t completely finished, as a spin-off soon entered development after the cancellation, with Shemar Moore set to reprise his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.
Titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, the show is set to premiere on Starz on September 25, 2026, and marks a new chapter for Hondo. As teased by the official logline, after stepping away from leading the 20-David Squad, Hondo is called back into action to head a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit composed of untested and unpredictable young recruits. He must bridge a generational gap, manage conflicting personalities, and transform a team of outsiders into a cohesive force capable of defending the city and preserving the program that shaped his identity.
There’s even more exciting news for fans of the action franchise as the reboot’s future has officially been decided. That said, S.W.A.T. Exiles has been renewed for Season 2, as announced by Moore two days ago. “I got such great news,” the TV icon shared on Instagram, “S.W.A.T. Exiles just got picked up for Season 2, baby. That’s right. We start shooting in a couple months.” A premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, but at least we know filming begins in a few months, meaning Season 2 could arrive later next year. It’s also worth noting that Season 1 wrapped filming back in February.
Who Stars in ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’?
In addition to Moore reprising his role as Hondo, S.W.A.T. Exiles‘ cast includes 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s Ronen Rubinstein as Jude Callan, Freddy Miyares as Ethan Cole, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy Han, Adain Bradley as Malik Henderson, and Lucy Barrett as Samantha “Sammy” Bishop. Also reprising their roles in Season 1 from the original S.W.A.T. series are Jay Harrington, Patrick St. Esprit, and David Lim as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay, Commander Robert Hicks, and Victor Tan, respectively.
S.W.A.T. Exiles premieres on Starz this September.
