Streaming doesn’t have a real shortage of post-apocalyptic hits, but few have earned the same level of critical acclaim as Netflix‘s surprise series from last year. While some shows will take you underground, or on a trek through a broken America to see the aftermath, this one puts our heroes on the front foot as they try to figure out what the hell happened.
Based on one of Argentina’s most celebrated graphic novels, The Eternaut quietly became one of the streamer’s biggest international success stories when it premiered last year, winning over both critics and audiences with its gripping survival story and ambitious scale. Now, Netflix has revealed that the next chapter is set to be even bigger.
Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America, has confirmed that The Eternaut Season 2 is now in advanced development, with the streamer significantly expanding its scope. Speaking about the new season, Ramos revealed that work is already underway behind the scenes, particularly on the series’ visual effects and technical planning, with the hope that they can get it on-screen by 2027.
“The ambition has gone to a new level. Stuff is already happening, but it’s not actually with actors on screen, it’s technical with some VFX conceptualization. The actual shoot with the talent on screen, we don’t know [the dates] yet because it’s way bigger than Season 1, not only in budget, but in terms of scope and conception. We need to figure out how we deliver on everything that is expected to be delivered in Season 2, while yet being able to continue with it for a potential Season 3.”
Season 1 premiered on Netflix in April 2025 and quickly became both a critical and audience success, earning 96% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix officially renewed the series just one week after its debut.
What Is ‘The Eternaut’ About?
Based on Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s landmark 1957 graphic novel El Eternauta, the series follows Juan Salvo and a group of survivors when, after a summer’s night in Buenos Aires, a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. Juan and his friends embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth.
The series stars Ricardo Darín (Argentina, 1985, The Secret in Their Eyes) as Juan Salvo alongside Carla Peterson (Blondi, 2+2) as Elena, César Troncoso (Society of the Snow, The Substitute) as Alfredo Favalli, Andrea Pietra (El Reino, Socias) as Ana, Ariel Staltari (Okupas, Un Gallo para Esculapio) as Omar, and Mora Fisz (The Kingdom, Días de Gallos) as Clara.
The Eternaut Season 1 is streaming now on Netflix.
