Pierce Brosnan may have left his role as James Bond behind, but that doesn’t mean the action superstar is shying away from big roles in massive franchises. Last year, Brosnan made his MobLand debut opposite Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren in the Guy Ritchie-directed crime thriller series, which is returning for Season 2 in just over one month. Last summer around this time, Brosnan also starred in one of the biggest Netflix movies of the year, The Thursday Murder Club, which was positioned as the next Knives Out. Brosnan returned to his spy thriller roots earlier in the year with his role in Black Bag, the Michael Fassbender-starring spy thriller with Cate Blanchett. The film has become a streaming super-hit on Peacock over the last year after grossing $43 million at the box office.
Brosnan is always on the hunt for his next big role, and one of the most exciting on the sale for the 007 veteran is Ray Cooper, who he’ll play in the 2027 thriller, Cliffhanger. This afternoon, news broke that Brosnan is also joining Netflix’s most ambitious action franchise, Extraction, for the third installment, which is currently filming in Australia. Marvel veteran Chris Hemsworth leads the action series alongside Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani. Brosnan is one of five new additions to the Extraction 3 cast announced this afternoon — the other four include Don Lee, (Train to Busan), Joe Taslim (The Furious), Chi Lewis-Perry (28 Years Later), and Siena Agudong (Carrie). Details about the roles of all newcomers, and the plot, are being kept secret right now, but the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, are once again producing through their AGBO banner. Hemsworth also produces through Wild State.
Are The First Two ‘Extraction’ Movies Good?
The first Extraction movie, which was released in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was ravaging the world, earned scores of 67% from critics and 74% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The 2023 sequel improved on this with scores of 79% from critics and 84% from fans on the aggregate site, setting up the third installment to be one of the most anticipated action films on the slate. Sam Hargrave is back in the director’s chair for Extraction 3 after also directing the first two films. He even helmed the Matchbox movie starring John Cena, which is coming soon to Apple TV.
