With four months to go until the biggest box-office clash since “Barbenheimer” in 2023, both movies involved — Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three — have opened pre-sales. As expected, both films are fueling interest in each other, much like how Oppenheimer and Barbie did three years ago. Combined, those two hits grossed around $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are all but guaranteed to beat this record. The Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole is off to a flying start in box-office pre-sales, setting itself up for one of the biggest opening-weekend hauls of all time. This record was beaten only a few weeks ago by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday is poised to generate similar attention in its opening frame this December.

According to the Global Box Office portal, the movie has already grossed $35 million in advance ticket sales, with months to go until its release. No other movie has opened pre-sales this early, but Marvel desperately needs a win. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day has certainly brought the MCU back on track with its stellar performance so far — the film has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide — it would take a string of hits to make up for the underperformance of The Marvels, Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

How Much Is ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Projected to Gross in Its Box-Office Debut?

No expense is being spared by Disney to reignite interest in its most lucrative franchise; the studio brought back the Russo Brothers to direct, and found ways for Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to return after their characters were given a farewell in Avengers: Endgame. According to Global Box Office, Avengers: Doomsday could generate between $260 million and $300 million in its first frame. By comparison, Avengers: Endgame set a new record in 2019 with a $357 million debut, which was broken by Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s $360 million haul in July. Meanwhile, director Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Three is also eyeing a massive, franchise-record $100 million-plus opening after grossing $10 million in pre-sales. The two films will face off on December 18, and will likely contribute to a new domestic weekend record.
