The wait is finally over. The new season of HBO‘s acclaimed costume drama, The Gilded Age, is on its way. The third season ended on a shattering cliffhanger last season, and now we finally know when it will return…as well as getting a first glimpse of season 4 in a new teaser.

The Gilded Age is set in 1880s New York City, a time and place of robber barons, technological advancement, and massive income inequality. It centers around two families; one is headed by the “new money” Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George Russell (Morgan Spector), while the other consists of “old money” dowager sisters Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), who use their increasingly limited means to support their orphaned niece, Marian (Louisa Jacobson). Last season saw a rift grow between Bertha and George over Bertha’s manipulations to marry their daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) off to the Duke of Buckingham. Meanwhile, both and her friend Peggy (Denée Benton) may have found love; the former, with Bertha and George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson), and the latter, with the capable Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica).

Now, as season 4 begins, it seems there’s still no love lost between George and Bertha, who are keeping up appearances to maintain their social standing. Meanwhile, Ada and Agnes are preparing to hail to the chief, as the President of the United States (likely Grover Cleveland, by this point in the show’s timeline) is coming to dinner. There’s still an imbalance of power between the two, as Ada inherited a small fortune from her late husband last season, while Agnes’ fortunes remain in decline. Peggy is ingratiating herself with her would-be in-laws, while Marian is forging her own path. You’ll see it all unfold starting on November 1.

Who Created ‘The Gilded Age’?

The Gilded Age was created by Julian Fellowes, who previously penned the film Gosford Park and created the hit drama Downton Abbey for ITV. It originally began life as a Downton Abbey prequel before evolving into something else entirely. It was first created for NBC, and was to premiere in 2019, but it proved too ambitious for broadcast TV, and moved to HBO, where it eventually debuted in 2022.

Season 4 of The Gilded Age will premiere on November 1 on HBO.
