Next month marks what would’ve been Agatha Christie‘s 136th birthday, and there’s no better place to celebrate than BritBox. On her birthday — September 15 — the streamer has put together a concoction of the best of Christie, from classic movies to a brand-new arrival, to help fans celebrate. This includes classic Warner Bros. titles such as 1961’s Murder She Said, 1963’s Murder at the Gallop, and 1964’s Murder Most Foul, as well as Tommy and Tuppence, an all-new release starring Josh Dylan (Masters of the Air) and Antonia Thomas (The Good Doctor) as the titular pair.
This announcement arrived at a similar time to a first look at the most exciting new Christie adaptation, as the hugely talented Edward Bluemel (My Lady Jane) takes on the moustache-twirling, crime-solving role of Hercule Poirot. Production has now begun in Liverpool on the series, titled Hercule, which has been described as an “intimate study” of Poirot himself. Alongside Bluemel, the cast includes Henry Ashton (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), James D’Arcy (Oppenheimer), Calvin Demba (Supacell), Phil Dunning (Smoggie Queens), and many more famous faces.
But why not take things one step further with a fictionalized version of Christie herself as part of a brand-new series? A new 10-part mystery series is coming to BritBox featuring Bryony Hannah as Agatha Christie, Miles Jupp as G.K. Chesterton, and Cara Theobold as Dorothy L. Sayers, who you can see decked out in full period costume in the image below. Produced by BBC Studios Drama Productions and filming across the West Midlands, The Detection Club also features Viraj Juneja (Little English) as D.I. Greenway, and was created by Kit Lambert (Father Brown), based on an original idea by acclaimed author Simon Brett.
What is ‘The Detection Club’ About?
This exciting new series asks the question, “What if the creators of our greatest fictional detectives had the chance to solve murders themselves?” according to creator Lambert. But what exactly is it about? You can expect plenty of mystery and style in this enticing new series, which is inspired by the golden age of detective fiction. A synopsis reads:
“Set against a backdrop of literary glamour, social change and deadly intrigue, The Detection Club follows the mysterious society formed by three of Britain’s most celebrated crime writers Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton, as they are drawn into a series of real-life murder investigations.”
