Not long ago, television was filled with lawyers of all kinds. From high-profile, flashy corporate titans like on Suits to high-powered ones navigating complex situations like on Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, legal dramas were some of the most era-defining shows. The 2020s haven’t featured legal dramas as often, but the tide has slowly turned over the last few years as more streaming services and networks return to this storytelling staple. And the appetite for legal shows has been repeatedly proven by the success and popularity of Netflix‘s smash hit The Lincoln Lawyer.
The legal thriller based on Michael Connelly‘s books has remained one of the streamer’s top-performing shows, securing a spin-off ahead of a planned conclusion. It follows Mikey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a high-powered defense attorney in Los Angeles navigating highly complicated cases. Even networks like USA Network have returned to legal dramas with The Rainmaker. The series follows a small team of brilliant attorneys who use their skills to defend the vulnerable. Hulu is also developing a legal thriller starring Elisabeth Moss, who plays a lawyer defending a client accused of murder while dealing with blackmail.
The next network tapping into this audience is ABC. Deadline has reported that the network is developing Con Law, an original legal drama. The series blends elements from several other legal dramas. Con Law resembles Suits by focusing on a brilliant, high-powered corporate attorney. Like Haller, she finds herself on the darker side of the law when she is wrongfully convicted of murdering someone close to her: her husband. This turn of events costs her everything — her freedom, her career, her daughter. Six years later, she gets her resurrection walk when she is exonerated. Instead of returning to practicing corporate law, she joins a scrappy defense firm like the one Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) finds himself in and translates her ruthless corporate skills into defending the vulnerable. She is also looking into her husband’s murder to figure out what really happened.
Who Is Behind ‘Con Law’
Joey Falco wrote and executive-produced the series. Known for writing on shows like Sleepy Hollow and Treadstone, Falco is also a published author with his debut novel Blood on the Vine coming out in 2025. He is also an executive producer and showrunner, having done the latter on the CW show Charmed. He has other projects in development at Netflix and Amazon. Jordan Cerf is also an executive producer. Con Law is still in the early stages of development, so casting hasn’t been announced, but if ABC greenlights the series, that news should be breaking soon.
