The 78th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday finished off its second of back-to-back ceremonies this weekened at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The double bill formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys now leads into the televised Primetime Emmys on September 14 live on NBC and Peacock.
This weekend’s ceremonies handed out a total of 102 statuettes across numerous craft categories for this year’s crop of Emmy nominees.
On Sunday, Widow’s Bay, DTF: St Louis and the canceled Spider-Noir were the big winners. Apple’s Widow’s Bay triumphed in guest acting (Betty Gilpin), casting, sound mixing, production design, cinematography, music supervision, music composition and sound editing, while DTF won both limited series supporting actor categories and swept the directing and writing races for series creator Steven Conrad in addition to scoring wins for cinematography and picture editing.
Prime Video’s Spider-Noir meanwhile conquered in stunt coordination, title design, special visual effects, cinematography and sound editing.
South Park won its fifth Emmy for best animated show – it’s first since 2013 — while Shailene Woodley took home her first Emmy in the guest actor category for Paradise, which also marked the Hulu drama’s first win since launching last year.
David Harbour also beat out his co-star Jason Bateman for supporting actor in HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis – headmitted it wasn’t a fair fight – while their co-star Linda Cardellini won for supporting actress. Their boss, DTF creator Steve Conrad, also triumphed in the directing and writing categories. (Those four categories were part of a move by the Television Academy that shifted a total of five categories off the Primetime Emmy telecast, changes that drew the ire of Hollywood guilds.)
Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures won outstanding movie.
Noah Wyle opened Night 2 with a hope-filled message for the artists in the room.
“Whether you’re a director, a stage manager, a grip, a set designer, recognizing you for all your creativity, your ingenuity, and your effort is crucial. It is wonderful that many of you will receive Emmys here tonight, and I hope that you all get to continue to work on exciting projects continue to hone your crafts and fulfill your calling, and that you appreciate how special that is.”
Other highlights from Sunday included the ovation given to veteran actor Ernest Harden Jr. for winning in the guest actor category for The Pitt, and Eric Bauza from Coyote vs. ACME who accepted the voice-over Emmy on behalf of Bridgerton’s Julie Andrews by talking in a Donald Duck voice. And speaking of canceled shows receiving their just rewards, Apple TV’s Palm Royale won for won for production design choreography, costumes and makeup.
Among the notable winners Saturday, the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny, The Traitors and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert were among the big winners. The Muppet Show also had a great night with wins including for variety special.
In the solo categories, Jimmy Kimmel was feted as the best game show host, Octavia Spencer won for narrating Lost Women of Alaska, and a teary-eyed Mariska Hargitay took home Emmys for best documentary and for directing My Mom Jayne. She’s also set to host the Primetime Emmys.
Scroll down for the winners by show and platform, and all the winners from the first two nights of the Emmys, which will be edited into a single broadcast airing September 12 on FXX.
