The next film in The Matrix franchise might have just received its most disappointing update. One half of the team that created the franchise, Lily Wachowski, has outlined how she would like to be involved in the next installment.
Appearing on the Business podcast, Lily said, “They’re always gonna wanna make another thing. Personally, I don’t wanna play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kinda done.” However, the door is not completely closed on the future just yet.
The biggest obstacle facing The Matrix 5 isn’t a script
Despite Lily Wachowski’s uncertain future in The Matrix 5, there is another area where she and her sister/creative partner Lana Wachowski can help launch the franchise’s next chapter. Drew Goddard, writer of Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, has expressed interest in the franchise, but only with the Wachowskis’ explicit blessing.
Regarding this, Lily said, “But there may be a thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn’t wanna go forward unless he gets our blessing.” She continued, “…maybe we’re gonna stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel, and if we wanna pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So, it could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”
The last film in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, only saw Lana of the sister duo return to the director’s chair. The movie failed to impress fans and critics alike, grossing only $160.2 million against its $190 million budget.
It is unknown whether Drew Goddard’s ideas for the franchise’s future will excite The Wachowskis. However, Goddard’s recent success with Project Hail Mary might push the needle on any future project in the franchise just enough for the creators to feel comfortable with a sixth mainline installment.
The Matrix can be rented on Apple TV or Prime Video.
