Netflix has a penchant for reviving beloved franchises. Recently, the streamer brought the children’s novels of Laura Ingalls Wilder back to life, as the new Western series Little House on the Prairie became an instant streaming hit. Not to be confused with the original series that ran between 1974 and 1983, this adaptation of the original novels was a fresh retelling that earned plenty of praise from critics, even being called a “masterpiece“ in Maggie Lovitt‘s review for Collider.
After almost a year of whispers that it would be revived by Netflix, it was announced in March 2025 that the wheels on the Mystery Machine would be turning once more as Scooby-Doo: Origins was greenlit. The first image and plot details were revealed a few months back as production began in Atlanta, Georgia, with hopes high that the world’s biggest streamer could breathe new life into the beloved franchise, which was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and first aired on CBS in 1969.
This past weekend, Netflix delivered the biggest update yet, as they confirmed that production on Season 1 of Scooby-Doo: Origins had been completed, with a selection of pictures of the cast in costume attached. Such iconic characters — especially after being cast to perfection in 2002 — deserve well-chosen performers, with fans excited about those trusted to solve a brand-new batch of mysteries. Fred Jones (Maxwell Jenkins), Daphne Blake (Mckenna Grace), Velma Dinkley (Abby Ryder Fortson), and Shaggy Rogers (Tanner Hagen) will pull the mask from crooks in 2027, with the brilliant Paul Walter Hauser also confirmed as part of the ensemble.
What is ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ About?
Written, showrun, and executive produced by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, Scooby-Doo: Origins already benefits from plenty of talent behind-the-scenes, with the talented Toby Haynes (Andor) confirmed to be directing the pilot episode. But what exactly will this series be about? Netflix have described it as a “modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog,” adding in the official synopsis:
“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
Scooby-Doo: Origins will debut on Netflix in 2027.
