There’s no shortage of British detective dramas these days, that’s for sure, so for one to distinguish itself from the pack during its first season? That takes a particular skill, and yet this one managed it. Based on the enormously successful novels by Belgian author Georges Simenon, MASTERPIECE PBS struck gold with its latest adaptation, with Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia: The Next Chapter) taking over a character previously played by several legendary actors, including Rowan Atkinson, Michael Gambon, and Richard Harris.
Now, Maigret is officially heading back to work. MASTERPIECE PBS has released the first trailer for Maigret Season 2, confirming that the detective drama will return Sunday, October 18 at 9/8c on PBS. The new episodes will also be available to stream through PBS.org, the PBS app, and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video.
Season 2 will see Maigret continuing to pursue justice through his unconventional approach to police work, relying on empathy, a strong moral compass, and his instincts rather than simply following conventional investigative methods. This time, however, he’ll also have a new boss looking over his shoulder.
What Can We Expect From ‘Maigret’ Season 2?
Nathaniel Parker (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries) has joined the cast as Maigret’s new boss, giving the veteran detective actor another opportunity to enter the world of television crime drama. Parker is best known to mystery fans for playing Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley across six seasons of the BBC’s The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, while his extensive screen career has also included Merlin, The Last Duel, Stardust, The Haunted Mansion, and Vanity Fair. Alex Bhat (Marie Antoinette) is another new addition to Season 2 and will play George Bonfils. The new season will adapt three of Simenon’s best-known Maigret novels: The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien, The Yellow Dog, and Maigret’s Revolver. According to PBS, the cases will significantly raise the stakes for both Maigret and his wife, Louise, as the detective and his team investigate another collection of haunting and increasingly complicated crimes.
Stefanie Martini (The Last Kingdom) returns as Louise Maigret, while Kerrie Hayes (Blue Jean), Shaniqua Okwok(It’s a Sin), and Reda Elazouar (Sex Education) are back as members of Maigret’s loyal investigative team, nicknamed “Les Maigrets.” Nathalie Armin (Showtrial) returns as prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel, James Northcote (The Imitation Game) as Joseph Moers, and Rob Kazinsky (Pacific Rim) as Inspector Justin Cavre. The show is created by Patrick Harbinson (Homeland). The first season currently holds a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, giving Season 2 a rather high bar to clear when Wainwright’s Maigret returns for his next investigations.
Maigret Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 18 at 9/8c on PBS and will stream on PBS.org, the PBS app, and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video.
