Melissa McCarthy‘s new TV show just got its first reveal. Netflix has released the first-look image, giving viewers their very first glimpse. The streamer has also announced the premiere date for the new true-crime show, which explores one of America’s most infamous unsolved murder cases.
The series is titled The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. It stars Melissa McCarthy alongside Clive Owen, playing Patsy and John Ramsey. The first-look image has the pair dressed head-to-toe in black, seated together wearing serious expressions during a recreated 1997 interview.
The series also stars an ensemble cast including Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Shea Whigham, Margo Martindale, and Emily Mitchell. Richard LaGravenese serves as showrunner and executive producer, with 101 Studios producing the project.
Originally developed for Paramount+, the series was later dropped by the platform before Netflix stepped in to acquire it.
Why the JonBenét Ramsey case remains unsolved
The six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family’s Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996. Patsy Ramsey called the police after finding a ransom note demanding $118,000, and John Ramsey later discovered his daughter’s body in the basement’s hidden or little-used room.
Nearly 30 years later, the case remains unsolved due to early investigation missteps that contaminated the crime scene and conflicting theories. The Boulder PD has received more than 21,000 tips, letters, and emails over the years. Yet, no killer has been charged.
A media frenzy quickly centered suspicion on the family, but prosecutors lacked sufficient evidence to convict. In 1998, a grand jury voted to indict the parents on child-abuse charges related to the child’s death. However, prosecutors did not move ahead with the charges as they lacked enough evidence. In 2008, District Attorney Mary Lacy officially cleared the family of suspicion.
The new series will examine the case from multiple perspectives and explore the speculation surrounding the mystery and the unresolved grief that followed.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey premieres on December 10 on Netflix.
