Hideo Kojima is returning to the genre that made him one of gaming’s most recognizable creators, but his next espionage game will look considerably different from Metal Gear Solid. Announced in 2024, PHYSINT is being positioned as the culmination of Kojima’s four decades in the industry, combining a cinematic cast with technology intended to blur the line between video games and movies.
Kojima Productions has already assembled an international ensemble for the project, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star Charlee Fraser, Train to Busan actor Don Lee, and Godzilla Minus One star Minami Hamabe. Now, the studio has finally revealed the actor who will stand at the center of its mysterious new action-espionage story.
Bill Skarsgård will play the lead role in PHYSINT, Kojima Productions confirmed during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. The announcement arrived alongside a new poster featuring Skarsgård and Fraser, offering another early glimpse at the still-secretive project and the faces players will follow when Kojima makes his long-awaited return to espionage. “I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said in a statement.
Bill Skarsgård Is Leading Hideo Kojima’s Return to Espionage
“We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”
Skarsgård is best known for turning Pennywise into a new horror icon in 2017’s It and its 2019 sequel, but his career has also made him a familiar presence in action, horror, and blockbuster filmmaking. His credits include Nosferatu, Barbarian, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Boy Kills World, while he recently returned to the world of It as both an actor and executive producer on HBO Max’s Welcome to Derry. That combination makes Skarsgård an especially perfect fit for Kojima, whose games frequently ask performers to move between intimate character work and increasingly surreal genre spectacle. Kojima Productions has not revealed who Skarsgård is playing or provided significant details about the game’s story, so it remains unclear whether his unnamed protagonist will resemble the traditional spies that defined Kojima’s earlier career or offer a stranger reinvention of the archetype.
The casting news also arrives with a major change behind the scenes, as Kojima Productions recently confirmed Xbox as PHYSINT’s new publishing partner. The two companies are already working together on the horror project OD: Knock, and adding PHYSINT to that partnership gives Xbox an even larger role in the studio’s future slate. The move to partner with Xbox is also not particularly surprising given Kojima‘s response to Sony‘s wildly unpopular physical media decision. Kojima has described PHYSINT as a new benchmark for the action-espionage genre, with cutting-edge technology and a high-profile cast helping create an experience that exists somewhere between a game and a movie.
No release date or launch window has been announced for PHYSINT.
