Managed Democracy isn’t going to spread itself across the galaxy, and if Super Earth needs somebody capable of punching an alien directly in the face, there aren’t many more qualified candidates than the human refrigerator currently playing Jack Reacher. After losing its original leading man earlier this summer, Sony’s take on one of PlayStation’s biggest gaming successes may have found exactly the sort of turkey-sized fists it needs.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Alan Ritchson (Reacher) is officially in talks to star in Helldivers, replacing Jason Momoa (Aquaman), who departed the project in June. Justin Lin (Fast Five) remains attached to direct, with the movie currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 10, 2027.
If the deal closes, it’s a huge step for Ritchson as it’ll mark his first lead role in a major studio picture having been limited to indie fare and streaming movies — although his output has been wonderfully consistent and well chosen. Exactly who Ritchson would play hasn’t been revealed, although there’s a pretty good argument that Helldivers shouldn’t really have one conventional leading man at all because the game is essentially Edge of Tomorrow with plankton being deployed across the galaxy to squish bugs, and be squished, then and promptly being replaced by another equally patriotic defender of Super Earth. Giving Ritchson 15 minutes before introducing another famous action star might be considerably closer to the spirit of the games. Just saying.
What Is ‘Helldivers’ About?
Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, Helldivers puts players in control of expendable shock troops fighting to defend the hilariously authoritarian Super Earth from alien enemies. Helldivers 2 took that fun concept and expanded it into a massive multiplayer campaign built around spreading freedom, liberty, and “Managed Democracy” throughout the galaxy. If you don’t like democracy, we will force it upon you and you will like it.
It’s Starship Troopers meets Edge of Tomorrow, and a bit of Ritchson‘s War Machine thrown in for good measure. If he also wants to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, he really couldn’t have picked a better movie, although we’d hope the budget on this doesn’t explode too high. The two games have collectively sold more than 12 million copies, with Helldivers 2 transforming the property into one of PlayStation’s biggest modern franchises.
Helldivers is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 10, 2027, from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
