It used to be that a miniseries was exactly what it sounded like. Once it was done, it was over with, with the possibility for a sequel. Recently, however, a successful miniseries may find itself becoming an ongoing series…although that usually happens after it’s already picked up some Emmys for Outstanding Limited Series. It’s happened in recent years with FX‘s acclaimed Shogun, and now with HBO‘s hit crime thriller Task. And now, one of Netflix‘s most acclaimed minis of last year is getting a second season.

Claire Danes has had a successful run on TV in the last decade and a half, starting with her acclaimed performance on the terrorism thriller Homeland. Following that show’s conclusion in 2020, she’s starred in a series of successful minis, including The Essex Serpent, Fleishman Is in Trouble, and Full Circle. Now, she’s about to take another turn on Netflix, although it’s unclear who will be coming back with her.

The Beast in Me, a psychological crime thriller that premiered on Netflix in November 2025, is getting a second season. Danes will return as writer Annie Wiggs, having survived the events of the first series. It was nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the Emmys, while Danes and co-star Matthew Rhys were nominated for their performances. Rhys took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor (as well as a separate trophy for Widow’s Bay, putting him in the Emmys record books), but given his fate at the end of the series, it’s unlikely that he’ll be back outside a flashback or dream sequence. Creator Gabe Rotter is back, as is showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon; the latter will be joined in his showrunning duties by Daniel Pearle, who wrote three episodes of the first series.

What Is ‘The Beast in Me’ About?

Danes is Annie Wiggs, a writer who’s suffering from terminal writer’s block after the tragic death of her son and her subsequent divorce from her wife (Natalie Morales). That all changes when she meets her new next-door neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Rhys), the scion of a real estate dynasty and the alleged murderer of his first wife. The charming Nile soon worms his way into Annie’s life, becoming the subject of her next book.

A second season of The Beast in Me is in development; no release date has yet been announced.
