The Doctor has fought Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and just about every other nasty thing the universe can throw at him, but it’s difficult to go much bigger than literally meeting the Devil. Twenty years ago, the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler landed on a planet that really shouldn’t have existed, met the Ood for the first time, and discovered something ancient waiting beneath the surface. Now we’re finally going back.
David Tennant’s (Good Omens) Doctor Who is officially returning to theaters for a special one-night-only event on November 23, with The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit being combined into a newly re-edited, movie-length extended cut. The Doctor Who Day event will screen in more than 1,000 cinemas across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with tickets going on sale beginning September 25.
Tennant stars as the Tenth Doctor alongside Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie) as Rose Tyler, with Claire Rushbrook (Sherwood) as Ida Scott, Will Thorp (A.D. The Bible Continues) as Toby Zed, Shaun Parkes (Small Axe) as Zachary Cross Flane, Danny Webb (Alien 3) as Mr. Jefferson, Ronny Jhutti (EastEnders) as Danny Bartock, and MyAnna Buring (The Witcher) as Scooti Manista. Gabriel Woolf provides the voice of the Beast.
What’s Different About ‘The Satan Pit’?
BBC Studios says the movie-length edit will incorporate footage directly into the “film” that audiences have never previously experienced as part of the finished story. Natasha Spence, Global Events Director at BBC Studios, explained:
“Part of what makes Doctor Who so extraordinary is that there is always more to discover. Even with a story as loved as The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, we’re able to offer fans something they haven’t experienced before, with previously deleted scenes restored into the adventure and never-before-seen extended footage included in this special cinema cut.”
Spence added that Doctor Who Day offered an appropriate opportunity to bring the story to theaters: “Doctor Who Day is the perfect moment to celebrate that sense of discovery with fans. We’re delighted to be working with CinemaLive again to bring this unforgettable Tenth Doctor and Rose story to the big screen, and to give audiences the chance to experience it together in cinemas for the first time.”
The screening will also include an exclusive interview with director and producer James Strong, who will look back on making the two-parter and its place within the modern Doctor Who era.
