Adam Brody’s most underrated movie is getting a TV adaptation on Hulu. The mystery comedy The Kid Detective is being developed as a series, with its original filmmaker returning behind the scenes.
According to a Variety report, Evan Morgan, who wrote and directed the movie, will executive produce the Hulu series. Adam Brody, who starred as Abe Applebaum, is not currently attached to the project.
What we know about Hulu’s adaptation plans for Kid Detective
Hulu’s series will center on a former detective who gets another chance to solve a case linked to his past and rebuild his reputation. The official logline reads, “When a missing persons case reopens the childhood murder he never solved, a washed-up former kid detective gets one last shot at proving his best days aren’t behind him.”
Alex Berger will write and executive produce the series. Rachel Kaplan will also executive produce through Absecon Entertainment. Original producers Jonathan Bronfman and Will Woods are returning as producers.
Morgan’s 2020 movie followed Abe, a once-famous child detective whose career fell apart after failing to solve a major case. He later takes on his first serious murder investigation, changing the direction of his life.
In its review, ComingSoon.net praised Morgan’s writing and directing, and appreciated Brody’s performance. It said, “This dark comedy goes deeper than it has any right to and spins a captivating yarn whilst examining everything from the dangers of celebrity worship to the way in which kids in modern society lack proper decorum. Brody does a tremendous job crafting a character who is both likable and oddly detached.”
The movie also featured Sophie Nélisse, Sarah Sutherland, Wendy Crewson, and Tzi Ma.
Hulu has not announced a release date for the series. Further casting details have also not been revealed beyond the creative team currently attached.
