Apple TV‘s new Awkwafina unscripted series dropped a trailer. Featuring Golden Globe-winning actress Awkwafina, the series is titled Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook. It follows the actress as she tries to revive her family’s restaurant legacy.
Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, takes center stage in the documentary. It tells her personal story as she attempts to revive her family’s Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. The restaurant, Lum’s, was run by Lum’s family and became part of her family legacy.
Apparently, she does not know how to cook. That makes the Shang-Chi actress develop those skills before taking on the challenge of bringing the restaurant back. Her journey takes the comedian across the country as she learns from chefs, restaurateurs, and members of her family.

What do we see in the trailer for Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook?
The trailer opens with Awkwafina struggling with some early kitchen mishaps. She calls her grandmother to tell her that she made “ramen with Spam.” Her grandmother’s reaction prompts Awkwafina to burst out laughing.
The minute and 42-second preview shows the 38-year-old introducing herself and revealing that her great-grandfather opened one of New York’s first Chinese-American restaurants. She then asks her grandmother why she never taught Awkwafina how to cook. Her grandmother replies, “You’re lazy.” The trailer then shows the actress explaining that she wants to bring the restaurant back.
Along the way, she gets to learn from family members, relatives, chefs, and restaurants across the country. She explores what her version of the restaurant could become while reviving her family’s legacy. In addition to starring, Awkwafina also executive produces, alongside David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies.
The eight-episode documentary arrives on November 6 on Apple TV.
