Netflix is returning to its roots with its next Bridgerton project. The streaming giant and Shondaland have ordered a new limited series set in the universe of the hit period drama. The show will explore a previously unseen chapter in the franchise’s history.
The Netflix spinoff will follow a young Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The story will explore their relationship before Violet became the family matriarch seen in the main series.
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Tom Verica will direct and executive produce, while Betsy Beers will also serve as an executive producer.
Netflix continues to expand the Bridgerton franchise
The new series will follow the same prequel approach as Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The show explored Queen Charlotte’s early years and her marriage to King George. It introduced India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest as the leads.
Bridgerton first premiered on Netflix in 2020 and quickly became a global hit. Its popularity has extended beyond the series, with the franchise inspiring fashion trends, music, books, memes, and live experiences. Netflix has also expanded the brand through events such as the Queen’s Ball and Bridgerton Concerts by Candlelight.
The main series is moving ahead with Season 5, which is currently in production in London. Hannah Dodd will return as Francesca Bridgerton, while Masali Baduza will play Michaela Stirling. The new season will focus on Francesca and her developing relationship with Michaela.
Bridgerton Season 4 was also a massive success on Netflix. It debuted at No. 1 on the Global English TV list and entered the Top 10 in 92 countries. Seasons 1 and 3 continue to rank among Netflix’s Most Popular English TV shows at No. 7 and No. 10.
With the new Violet-focused spinoff, Netflix continues to explore the history behind its most popular Bridgerton characters while giving fans another love story set before the main series.
