‘Marvel Zombies’: Disney’s R-Rated Marvel Series to Get Three New Specials!!

Disney recently dealt a major blow to its R-rated Marvel television slate. Despite going strong for two seasons and working ahead on its third, it was abruptly announced last month that Daredevil: Born Again‘s upcoming 2027 run would be its last. Showrunner Dario Scardapane, who managed to steer the Man Without Fear through creative turmoil involving a rework of the series before it launched in 2025, departed in post-production with his contract’s expiration, further driving the nail into Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) coffin. The news disappointed fans since Season 3 will finally welcome back Daredevil’s fellow Defenders, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones), for one more fight next year. At the very least, Marvel Animation still has one thing up their sleeve for those looking for something more violent.

Amid the spooky season, Marvel is officially more than doubling down on horror. During the big Marvel Television and Animation panel at New York Comic Con, not one, not two, but three new installments of Marvel Zombies were officially announced, running through 2029. However, there’s a bit of a catch. While the first entry last year was an entire season consisting of four episodes, the series will now span three new specials focusing on different areas of the Marvel universe. Official titles were unveiled for the specials through new posters.

First up, on Halloween 2027, Disney+ will release Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier. Story details have yet to be announced, but the title alone gives away that it will revolve around Bucky Barnes and, presumably, Sebastian Stan will return to voice the character. Bucky didn’t appear in the first Marvel Zombies series, but he was present in What If…?‘s zombie episode. Series co-creator Brian Andrews previously shared in an interview with Brandon Davis for Phase Hero that he envisioned a larger storyline for the Winter Soldier that he didn’t want to “shortchange” by trying to squeeze it into the already limited runtime of the first Marvel Zombies season. After that, in 2028, Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu will follow, focused on Moon Knight, and finally, 2029 will welcome Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian.

What Happened in the First Season of ‘Marvel Zombies’?

Created by Andrews and Zeb Wells, Marvel Zombies picked up from the “What if… Zombies?!” episode, following the remaining survivors of a global apocalypse that has infected most of the world with a zombie virus. Heroes, including Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Blade Knight (Todd Williams), and many more, began a journey through their dystopian world, fighting the zombified Avengers and other undead while trying to save the world with a cure to the plague. Their plans, however, did not go off as intended. The series ended on a haunting cliffhanger, with a zombified Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) succeeding and trapping Kamala in an idyllic vision of the world that isn’t real.

Marvel Zombies Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.
