HBO got off to a hot start earlier this year with the second season of The Pitt, the hit HBO medical drama starring Noah Wyle. Wyle spent years recurring as a doctor on ER, and that fame carried over and has helped make The Pitt one of the most-watched shows of the last two years on HBO. The platform has also found success this year with not one, but two Game of Thrones spin-offs, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon. HBO debuted the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earlier this year, and there was such little doubt that the show was going to be a hit that it was renewed for Season 2 before an episode ever hit the air. Season 2 is expected to stream sometime in the first half of 2027.
HBO has released dozens of famous (and some infamous) projects over the years, but one of its most polarizing releases is finally getting a revival. News broke this afternoon that HBO has ordered five new episodes of the popular coming-of-age raunchy comedy, Girls, which ran for six seasons between 2012 and 2017. Plot details about the revival are being kept under wraps for now, but Lena Dunham is confirmed to reprise her role as Hannah, with Allison Williams returning as Marnie, Jemima Kirke returning as Jessa, and Zosia Mamet back as Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannels returning as Eli. Adam Driver is reportedly not returning for the new five-episode series, which is set to film sometime next year and likely be released in 2028.
What Is ‘Girls’ About?
The official synopsis for Girls, which holds solid scores of 89% from critics and 76% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes across all six seasons, reads as follows: “An aspiring writer and her three friends in New York try to make sense of what life has in store for them after college. They’re not sure what they want or whom they want it from, and the picture isn’t getting any clearer. Hannah thinks she has what it takes to be a successful writer, if only she would write something. She wants a boyfriend without dealing with an actual relationship, and she wants a job without having to work. Marnie is Hannah’s best friend, a Type A personality who has a serious boyfriend and an actual job. Jessa is a devil-may-care bohemian whose apparent lack of fear hides her own kind of insecurity. Her cousin, Shoshanna, is an NYU student who would love nothing more than to experience a “Sex and the City” lifestyle. The others tend to underestimate Shoshanna, but she proves to be a sharp source of wisdom.”
