BritBox is gearing up to deliver an unmissable new detective series to add to its pantheon of similar shows. Hercule is the most exciting new Agatha Christie adaptation in a long line of predecessors, with Edward Bluemel (My Lady Jane) lined up to take on the role of the iconic mustache-twirling Belgian. Described as an “intimate study” of Poirot himself, the cast for the series is already bursting with talent. Bluemel is joined by the likes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms alum Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, and many more famous faces.
But Hercule, in all its crime-solving glory, is far from the first detective series from across the pond on BritBox. One of the very best in recent years is Karen Pirie, which is off the back of two acclaimed seasons on ITV and BritBox. Lauren Lyle‘s titular sleuth faced an even tougher challenge in last October’s Season 2, as a promotion to detective inspector brought with it a confounding case like no other. Thankfully, she navigated this case successfully and is on the hunt for more Scottish cold cases to crack.
And more cold cases she will receive. It has been officially confirmed by ITV that Karen Pirie has been renewed for a third season. The upcoming third season will be based on Val McDermid‘s The Skeleton Road, with a big shake-up in the series announced. Instead of three 90-minute episodes, Season 3 will feature a more traditional six one-hour episodes, which means an extra hour-and-a-half of crime-solving for fans in total. Lyle said, “Playing Karen Pirie has become one of the most delicious thrills of my career and knowing that people of the world want more of her and her bumbag is an absolute honour.”
What Is ‘Karen Pirie’ Season 3 About?
Acclaimed Scottish screenwriter (The Bombing of Pan Am 103) is taking charge of the next season, with Marcus Wilson (Doctor Who) returning to produce, and screenwriter and actor Deli Segal (Pickle) penning one of the episodes. But what exactly is Season 3 about? Those who are familiar with the source material will know, but for everyone else, an official synopsis reads:
“The story starts with the discovery of a man’s remains hidden in the roof of a derelict Edinburgh building. DI Karen Pirie learns that the victim fled the Balkans conflict of the 1990s for the safety of Scotland to marry a now famous author, whose identity stirs up a hornets’ nest of publicity. As the investigation develops, Karen unearths dangerous secrets and a vicious cycle of revenge as someone takes justice into their own hands. Can Karen stop the killer before they kill again? And when present resentment collides with secrets of the past, the truth is more shocking than anyone could have imagined.”
