Fear not, costume drama devotees: The Gilded Age is finally on the cusp of returning. Season 4 of the hit HBO drama is set to premiere next month, but to whet your appetite, a new trailer has just dropped, promising more heartbreak and heartache in 1880s New York City. The Gilded Age is the brainchild of Julian Fellowes, who created Downton Abbey for ITV and PBS in 2010. It was initially conceived as a spin-off of Downton Abbey, but soon expanded beyond that premise. It was picked up by NBC back in 2012, but the success of Downton Abbey pushed it to the back burner; by the time Fellowes was ready to devote his full attention to it, NBC had second thoughts about putting such a lavish production on network TV. It subsequently moved to HBO, where it has become a critical and commercial hit.

In the new trailer for Season 4, the fallout of Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George (Morgan Spector) Russell’s breakup in the Season 3 finale continues. The robber baron and his socialite wife have finally reached a breaking point, thanks to Bertha’s handling of their daughter’s betrothal to the Duke of Buckingham. Their neighbors, old-money dowager sisters Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and Ada Forte (Cynthia Nixon), are having an adjustment of their own, as Ada now finds herself the one with the financial power.

In happier news, Agnes and Ada’s niece, Marian (Louisa Jacobson), and Bertha and George’s son, Larry (Harry Richardson), may have found love with each other; Marian’s friend, Peggy (Denée Benton), may have found happiness as well, with Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica). Will the new generation break the cycle, or are they doomed to repeat the mistakes of their elders? You’ll have to tune in to HBO or HBO Max on November 1 to find out.

What Else Is ‘The Gilded Age’ Cast Up To?

The new season isn’t the only production coming from the talented Gilded Age cast this fall. Many of the show’s cast members are Broadway veterans, and they’ll be putting those pipes to use in Voices of the Gilded Age: The Christmas Album. It is set to be released digitally, on CD, and on vinyl on November 6.

Season 4 of The Gilded Age will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on November 1.
