New promotional artwork for Avengers: Doomsday gives Ian McKellen’s Magneto his most complete and colourful costume look yet, releasing months before the film lands in cinemas and giving X-Men fans plenty to study in the meantime.
Ian McKellen’s Magneto stuns in new Avengers: Doomsday photo
The new photo, credited to HEXFacility, has McKellen’s Magneto front and centre with his arms stretched wide, a grey cape caught mid-billow and purple lightning flashing behind him. The pose reads like something pulled straight from a comic cover.
The costume itself is a clear change. Marvel Studios first showed this red-heavy design through a Hot Toys collectible, and the artwork now fills in the gaps: a high-collared tunic, matching trousers, tall black boots and the familiar helmet, with grey hair curling out beneath it. An X-shaped belt buckle removes any doubt about where he stands.
Moreover, HEXFacility’s Magneto belongs to a wider batch of Avengers: Doomsday posters, at least 25 of which have surfaced online. Several imitate vintage comic covers, complete with a corner box carrying the Marvel Studios logo and a combined Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men emblem.
Others spotlight Doctor Doom or his Doombots. Reports caution that this style of artwork may not mirror final on-screen designs. Treat the Magneto look as an exciting preview rather than a locked-in frame.
Ian McKellen has already described what Magneto gets up to. He says the character destroys New Jersey in a major sequence, and he recalled filming a moment where he stood in the wind attempting to look furious.
Those remarks point to a large, destructive set piece. That fits Magneto’s long history as a figure both terrifying and sympathetic. A story built on multiversal stakes hands him an ideal stage in Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday reaches theatres on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027. The Russos have said Marvel still hasn’t revealed its full cast, meaning more surprises remain. For longtime fans, McKellen back under the helmet is a genuine thrill.
