‘One Thousand and One Nights’: ‘Spartacus’ Creator Is Working on a Gritty ‘Aladdin’ Reboot!!

One of the most beloved fantasy sagas in human history is coming to television in a new reimagining. One Thousand and One Nights, the beloved collection of Middle Eastern folklore, will be re-envisioned as a cohesive fantasy saga. The mastermind behind the series is Daredevil and Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight.

One Thousand and One Nights, also known as Arabian Nights, is a collection of Middle Eastern folktales set in the Middle Ages. They purportedly originate with Shahrazad, a woman who was married off to a sultan who married a new woman every night before having her executed the following morning. To forestall her own doom, Shahrazad began telling the sultan a story on their wedding night, only to leave it unfinished. He postponed her execution so he could hear the ending, but she repeated the trick night after night for more than three years, by which point the sultan had fallen in love with her. The collection includes famous tales such as Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.

Now, as reported by Variety, DeKnight will spearhead a new One Thousand and One Nights series. Shahrazad will join forces with Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad to battle the Jinn, malevolent magical spirits from another dimension. In the course of her adventures, she will also become one of history’s greatest storytellers. The series is planning to shoot in the Middle Eastern kingdom of Bahrain starting next September. While it may be called One Thousand and One Nights, the first season is currently slated to run for ten episodes.

What Creatives Are Behind ‘One Thousand and One Nights’?

The series is created by Kamran Pasha (Kings). Pasha will executive produce alongside Steven S. DeKnight and Veritas Entertainment‘s Peter Jaysen (A Spy Among Friends), Alan Gasmer (Vikings), Aaron Shershow (Expats), and Clive Standen (The Morning Show). Andy Cutler will serve as producer.

In a statement, Jaysen and Gasmer said: “We have assembled the perfect creative and production team to adapt one of the most famous pieces of intellectual property ever created.”

One Thousand and One Nights will begin production in Bahrain in September 2027; no release date has yet been announced.
