‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’: Daisy Ridley to Headline Sci-Fi Remake Series!!

There’s still no word on when or if she’ll return to the Star Wars galaxy, but Daisy Ridley has her newest project lined up. It’s a change of pace for the actor; for the first time, she’ll be headlining a TV series. However, she isn’t wandering too far from the science fiction milieu of a galaxy far, far away.

Before she became internationally famous as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the then-unknown Ridley had a number of small roles in British TV series, including Mr. Selfridge, Casualty, and Toast of London. Since then, she’s largely stuck to the silver screen, and has a number of upcoming films in the works, including the Christmas Carol adaptation Ebenezer, the romantic comedy The Last Resort, and the action thriller The Good Samaritan. Back in 2022, she signed on to star in and executive produce The Christie Affair, a dramatization of Agatha Christie‘s mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926; that series has yet to materialize.

Now, Deadline reports that she’ll be exploring new depths in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, a reboot of the 1961 movie and the classic ABC series that spun out of it and ran for 110 episodes between 1964 and 1968. She’ll star as Lee Crane (a character played by The Fly‘s David Hedison in the original series), a brilliant scientist who comes aboard the USS Seaview, a mysterious retro-futuristic submarine that will only respond to her commands. She’s on a mission to investigate the death of her twin sister and the mysteries that lie beneath the oceans. Ridley will executive produce the series alongside writer Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) and director Matt Shakman (Fantastic Four: First Steps). It’s a production of Legendary Television and the estate of original series creator Irwin Allen for Paramount+.

What Other Irwin Allen TV Series Is Akiva Goldsman Working On?

Goldsman has a history with Allen, who had an empire of sci-fi shows in the 1960s before becoming Hollywood’s master of disaster in the 1970s; he penned the script for 1998’s Lost in Space, another reboot of one of Allen‘s shows. As was reported last year, Goldsman is also working on reboots of two other Allen series: Land of the Giants, which was about a group of humans stranded on a planet of enormous humanoids, and The Time Tunnel, which followed a crew of time travellers lost in space-time.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is in development at Paramount+.
