Reboots are becoming more common, and though many are frustrated about the trend, some franchise shows are exactly what others want. Yet, even in this climate, not every show that deserves a continuation gets one. Fortunately, that is about to change for the horror cult-classic Z Nation. The post-apocalyptic series may have ended its run in 2018, but it remains beloved, and for good reason. Even after five seasons, the world offers plenty more opportunities, which is why Z Nation sparked a franchise.
Just a few years ago, the SYFY series received a two-season prequel, Black Summer, but Asylum recently announced a new sequel series that can fill the void for fans who want more of the epic story. Titled Z Nation: Resurrection, this upcoming sequel will continue the story with a new generation of survivors. But so far, news is scarce. Fans won’t see Z Nation: Resurrection for a while yet, but the news gives them something to look forward to, and there’s no denying Z Nation is one series that deserves a continuation.
‘Z Nation’ Deserves a Sequel
Z Nation is a unique blend of comedic elements and a zombie apocalypse story. However, this niche worked surprisingly well. Picking up three years into a virus-induced apocalypse, the series follows Murphy (Keith Allan), humanity’s best hope of survival. Used to test the vaccine, Murphy has retained control over himself despite being bitten by zombies, though he has undergone some zombie-like changes. As such, the antibodies in his blood may be the only thing that can stop the disease from spreading. Accompanied by a group of survivors, including Lieutenant Warren (Kellita Smith) and Citizen Z (DJ Qualls), Murphy must travel the country to the only functioning research lab, in a desperate attempt to save the world. This journey certainly opens many opportunities, and the series became known for its campy humor and creative action sequences. With no show quite like it, it’s no surprise that Z Nation’s ending left a void, especially considering its cult following.
‘Z Nation: Resurrection’ Will Continue the Story
Despite the goodwill toward the ending, rumors of a reboot have surfaced over the years, and fans aren’t alone in wanting it. Allan himself started a petition for an animated sequel called Z Nation: Reborn, hoping he and his co-stars could return to voice their characters in a new medium. Instead, fans are getting Z Nation: Resurrection, which will have a similar effect. The upcoming series can show how the world progresses following the original heroes’ journey. The series will explore the same zombie-infested world several years later as it faces a new undead threat that could wipe out the remaining human population.
Though details about the story are vague for now, the revival will introduce a new cast, setting up another adventure. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be goodbye to the characters fans know and love. Fan favorites Warren, Murphy, Doc (Russell Hodgkinson), and Citizen Z are in talks to reprise their characters, though they will be in supporting roles this time around. While it’s not the additional season some fans imagined, Z Nation: Resurrection can finally continue the original story, and that is something for fans to celebrate.
Z Nation is available to purchase on Apple TV in the U.S.
