‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’: Apple TV’s MonsterVerse Series Officially Sets Major Changes for Potential Season 3!!

Legendary‘s MonsterVerse may have carved out a niche on the big screen by uniting King Kong and Godzilla for the first time in a generation, but it’s made an impact on the small screen, too. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters explores the story behind the monster-watchers of Monarch, the organization introduced in 2014’s Godzilla. That series wrapped up its second season earlier this year; a third season is in development, but it might be very different than what fans have come to expect.

The first season took place over several different time periods. In the 1950s, it followed a trio of monster hunters: Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell), Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto), and Bill Randa (Anders Holm); in the 2010s, it saw Keiko’s grandchildren, Kate (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe) seek out an older Shaw (Kurt Russell) in the wake of the Godzilla’s devastating battle with a pair of insectoid titans in San Francisco. Season 2 cut between Shaw, Miura, and Randa discovering the mysterious Titan X in the ’50s and the creature’s re-emergence in the present.

As reported by Deadline, Legendary is now looking for a new creative team for a third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. They will replace the team led by Chris Black (Severance), who co-created the series with comic book writer Matt Fraction (The Invincible Iron Man). The new direction apparently includes new monsters from the MonsterVerse; whether that means Godzilla and King Kong, both of whom have recurred on Monarch, will not be included is yet to be seen. It’s also unclear if any of the characters from the first two seasons will return.

What’s Next for the MonsterVerse?

The two biggest stars of the MonsterVerse are stomping their way back into theaters next spring with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. They’ll face off against a cosmic menace alongside Dan Stevens, returning from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, plus new characters played by Kaitlyn Dever, Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and the late Sam Neill. Meanwhile, Lee Shaw is getting his own new series, with both Wyatt and Kurt Russell returning to play the character at various stages of his life. The 1984-set thriller will see Shaw get tangled up with both Cold War intrigue and giant monsters; it will also star Ralph Ineson, Corey Stoll, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen, and Stana Katic.

A third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is in development, but has not been officially greenlit.
