Episode – S01E06 “”I’ll Remember”
My Take – During the finale of the weird, tragic & probably the worst Season 5, the show went in an unexpected direction, getting rid of Afterlife, which frankly kinda seemed like a joke, as every other character who died would find a way to come back even after a huge emotional build up. Now before I talk more about the premiere, let me warn you, their are potential spoilers ahead!
Its been a couple of months now, Bonnie and Damon still presumed dead. Elena is grieving by becoming some herbal drug addict, which allows her to hallucinate Damon with dangerous after effects. Stefan too is mourning loss of Damon by becoming a mechanic! (Huh!) . Alaric, probably by next fav character (After Damon of course) is back (as show in the end of Season 5), is now coping with his new life as a vampire (how did that happen?) . Matt is thriving as he is involved in the new militia army lead by Colin Ferguson in a magic-less community, while Tyler, now back to a human with the werewolf gene & Caroline, is having picnics with her mom on the borders of Mystic Falls. Jeremy (the least interesting & most irritating character) is spending his days playing video games, making out with random girls and drinking beer, well that is the dream! The gang are scattered, and no one is coping particularly well.
While frankly I am just waiting for the writers to reveal the whereabouts of Bonnie and Damon, as in the last scene of the episode they are shown having Brunch (in Hell or Heaven?). Its sad like most shows, the quality & the plot lines has gone down with every new season, well yes it quite early to judge by the 1st pilot itself. It’s sad that Elena has always been the least interesting thing about her own show, and what the writers have decided to do outside of her situation is much more intriguing. Stefan, for example, has finally made good on his promise to get the hell out of Mystic Falls and his life has been much improved by the relocation, casual girlfriend and steady job included. If I didn’t want him on the show so badly, I would hope he stayed as far away as possible.
This wasn’t the most exciting episode of the show, but it was a premiere that set up a lot of things to come. Thankfully the separation of the cast wasn’t resolved in the first hour, either, and we can look forward to seeing them all go even further off the rails in the coming weeks. Good to have you back, Vampire Diaries.
