Episode – S01E01 “Lord Baltimore”
My Take – James Spader is awesome! No denying that! He personality & his mannerism is why I would say Season 1 was a hit, not the plot lines, even though they are fairly good! Well actually, Season ended with a boom, it did answer some question, but let many more open. So Berlin apparently blames Red for the death of his daughter. Meanwhile, Liz’s double-agent husband Tom was shot and presumed dead; but his body disappeared and it is a safe bet he will come back someday. Tom’s final words to Liz were to tell her that her father was still alive. Of course, many folks still think Red is Liz’s father, well including me a question the show will someday answer, though I doubt we will learn the truth behind Red and Liz’s relationship any time soon. Now before I talk more about the premiere, let me warn you, their are potential spoilers ahead!
In the season 2 premiere, The Blacklist moves away from questions of Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington’s true motives, and towards getting things at the FBI black site back in order, so that more names can be checked off the titular blacklist. Sure, there’s a hint of change in the air, but it’s really only the lingering vapors of aftermath. With the exception of a few mournful nods toward the departed Agent Malik, the smoke has mostly cleared on the Berlin incident. This was a pretty good start to the season, though lots of the Rowna/Nora split personality stuff felt unnecessary. Yawn. Berlin is suitably ruthless and Peter Stormare is playing this role wonderfully! Now, for the most interesting part of the episode, Berlin, who we first see soaking in a tub filled with water and ice — probably because his heart is as cold as ice. Thanks to Berlin hiring Lord Baltimore, they capture a woman named Naomi Highland (played by the ever-so-talented Mary-Louise Parker), a woman Red is very concerned about. Why? Oh, maybe because she was his wife at one time. Wait, that wife who supposedly died, alongside his daughter who just might be Lizzie? No, this is a different wife. LOL
The previews show that Red and Berlin will finally face off after 20 years of not seeing each other in episode 2. I can’t wait for that! The episode ends in chilling fashion. Red gets a package delivered to him. It contains a box and a cell phone. He hits redial on the phone and Berlin answers. Berlin taunts Red saying he is going to do to Naomi what Red did to Berlin’s daughter (we see an image of the pocket watch with Berlin’s daughter’s image in it). Berlin says “I’m going to send her back to you piece by piece by piece.” Red opens the box and a finger is inside it. Nice!!!!!!
