Looks like Netflix has made good on their plans with a 10-episode first season order of Lost in Space. The one-hour, sci-fi drama takes its inspiration from the original 1960s series from creator Irwin Allen which centered on the space-stranded Robinson family. The new version comes from Legendary TV and writing team Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter). Prison Break’s Zack Estrin will act as showrunner.

Fans will have to wait until 2018 to see Lost in Space debut on the streaming-content provider, but you can bet that all 10 episodes will be readily available for instant binging when they debut. And as a special treat for fans of Neil Marshall’s TV work–like say on Black Sails, Game of Thrones, and Constantine–he’s also set to direct several episodes of the series.

The synopsis for Lost in Space is as follows:

[T]he show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons.  Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages.

Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content, had this to say about the new project:

The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

Estrin will serve as executive producer alongside writers Sazama and Sharpless, with Synthesis Entertainment’s Kevin Burns (The Curse of Oak Island, Ancient Aliens) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Pacific Rim); and Applebox’s Emmy®-nominated director Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) and Marc Helwig.
